What is an ISBN Barcode?

An ISBN (International Standard Book Number) barcode is an EAN-13 barcode with a GS1 prefix of 978 or 979 — commonly known as the "Bookland" prefix. It uniquely identifies books and book-like products (audiobooks, mixed media publications, educational workbooks) for retailers, libraries, and publishers worldwide.

Every commercially published book sold through standard distribution channels (bookstores, Amazon, library systems) requires an ISBN. Without it, your book cannot be listed in the global book trade databases that retailers and libraries use to order inventory.

ISBN-10 vs ISBN-13

All books published after January 1, 2007 use ISBN-13. The transition to ISBN-13 was made to align with the EAN-13 international barcode standard and to expand the available namespace for book identifiers.

ISBN-10 was the previous 10-digit format used for books published before 2007. Every ISBN-10 has an equivalent ISBN-13 — you simply prepend "978" and recalculate the check digit. This generator accepts both formats and always outputs the ISBN-13 barcode for retail use.

ISBN Structure

An ISBN-13 has five elements separated by hyphens:

  • Prefix (978 or 979): The Bookland GS1 prefix
  • Registration group: Identifies country, language area, or territory (e.g., 0 or 1 = English language)
  • Registrant: Identifies the publisher
  • Publication: Identifies the specific edition or format
  • Check digit: Validates the barcode using a modulo-10 algorithm

Example: 978-0-306-40615-7 breaks down as prefix 978, group 0 (English), registrant 306, publication 40615, check digit 7.

For Self-Publishers

If you're self-publishing, you need to obtain an ISBN from your national ISBN agency before creating the barcode:

  • United States: Bowker (myidentifiers.com) — the official US ISBN agency
  • United Kingdom: Nielsen UK (isbn.nielsenbook.co.uk)
  • Canada: Library and Archives Canada (free for Canadian publishers)
  • Australia: Thorpe-Bowker

Note: ISBNs assigned by publishing platforms (Amazon KDP, IngramSpark) belong to those companies, which may restrict your distribution options. For maximum flexibility, purchase your own ISBN.

Placing the Barcode on Your Book Cover

The standard position for an ISBN barcode is the lower-right corner of the back cover. GS1 guidelines recommend a minimum barcode size of 80% magnification (approximately 29.8mm × 21mm). For best scanning results:

  • Use a white or light-colored background behind the barcode
  • Maintain a quiet zone (white space) of at least 6mm on each side
  • Print at minimum 300 DPI for commercial printing
  • Download SVG format from this generator for resolution-independent vector output

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I enter the ISBN with hyphens?

Yes. Enter your ISBN in any format (with or without hyphens) — the generator strips them automatically and validates the number.

What's the X at the end of some ISBN-10 codes?

The X represents the number 10 in the ISBN-10 check character algorithm. This generator handles it correctly.

Do I need to purchase an ISBN to publish a book?

For commercial distribution through bookstores and Amazon, yes. ISBNs in the US are issued by Bowker. Some self-publishing platforms provide free ISBNs, but those ISBNs are owned by the platform.

What is the difference between ISBN-10 and ISBN-13?

ISBN-10 is the older 10-digit format for pre-2007 books. ISBN-13 is the current standard aligned with EAN-13. This generator accepts both and outputs an ISBN-13 barcode.
